Todo es Cheque Leque en Siguatepeque= Everything's great in Siguatepeque
For the past two years I've been teaching English with the Destino del Reino ministry in Siguatepeque, Honduras. This fall I'll be returning for my 3rd year. Follow my adventures here(at the blog). Learn more about the ministry I work with at http://www.destinodelreino.org/
ThispastAugust I waslookingforwardtoreturningto Honduras andthe familiar patternoflifeinSiguathat I had come tolove. Duringmysecondyear I wouldn't needtoadjust to a newandat times confusing culture, mySpanishwas no longer as awkward, I hadformedfriendshipswithotherslivinginSigua. I waseagertogetbacktomystudents, weekly Biblestudy, revisitmyoldhauntsintown, etc. Then I receivedanemailtelling me thatourhouseintownwascurrentlyoccupiedby a youngfamilyandwouldnot be availableuntilSeptember, orpossiblyOctober. Wewouldhavetoliveatthe Destino Ministryfor a bit. ReactinginthewayHondruas has taught me to, I replied "That's ok, I can waitto be intown." However, inHonduras time is a conceptthat's not as concrete as itisinthestates. Ifyourmeetingisscheduledtostartat 4:00 peoplewillbegintoarriveatthat time, small-talk/coffee-drinking/socailizingwillwrapuparound 4:30ishandthenyourmeetingwillbegin. Andifyourhouseisscheduledto be readyforyoutomoveintoinSeptemberthenitwon't be readyuntilNovemberattheearliest, orin extreme circumstancesuntilDecember 17th.Thisisexactlywhathappened.Thankfullywe moved totownwhenweall(includingKarliethenewroomie) returnedinJanuary. My time livingat Destino wassweet. I enjoyedplayingwiththekidslivingatthecasa hogar(children's home) everyday, hearingRhonda's storiesofwhenshefirstcameto Honduras andlivedinthepoormountainvillagesandthereliablehotwater. However, that time has alsomade me trulyappreciatetheniceitiesoflivingintown. To be exact, theinternet/easycommunicationwithlovedones, social life, accesstogroceries, schoolsupplies, whatever I couldwantandall I haveto do iswalkdowntown, lecciones de espanol, Uno andsoccerwithVictorandKelly(some neighbor boys who always come by wanting to play or do odd jobs for us),plus a millionotherlittleblessings. We've beenhere 6 months andfinally, I feellike I've settledin.
